Definition of Gnomes

a legendary dwarfish creature supposed to guard the earth's treasures underground;

a person regarded as having secret or sinister influence, especially in financial matters;

a small garden ornament in the form of a bearded man with a pointed hat.

The description of gnomes. . .  has changed quite often over the years and remained different in different cultures. Originally, many of them were conceived of as ugly, ground dwelling creatures that were less human than the gnomes of today much like goblins.

The Garden Gnome . . .Garden gnomes are believed to make your tomatoes bigger and your garden grow better. Gnomes have the common attribute of being able to move through the earth as easily as humans move on top of the earth. The gnomes has been considered to include satyrs, pans, dryads, elves, brownies and goblins. Some helping plants and animals, some helping humans, some reclusive ones staying underground or in dark forests; perhaps hoarding treasure, and others interacting mischievously or even harmfully with humans.

Modern gnomes also live in gardens and wear pointed hats.

A new gnome trend. . . is the traveling gnome. One of the well-known gnomes is named  "Murphy." He has traveled the globe and his photos are taken taken in many different countries. Travelers now take their gnomes with them and photograph them.

It would be fun to take a gnome with you on your next adventure!

Gnomes are symbols of the earth element. . .  Gnomes first appeared in the oral tradition of Northern European folklore, so it is difficult to pinpoint their exact origins. August Heissner, a German manufacturer, was one of the fathers of gnome-making. His hand-painted gnomes were exported throughout the world. In Swedish history, the gnome was popular as one of the most important of the elemental spirits representing the earth, specifically stone and minerals. These gnomes were believed to possess the supernatural energies associated with these materials. In the symbolic realm of elements, there are four clans who rule the realms of nature, gnomes are the clan of earth elements. They encourage stability, grounding quality to our experience.
